Single Spin Superconductivity: Formulation and Ginzburg-Landau Theory

چکیده
We describe a novel superconducting phase that arises due to a pairing instability of the half-metallic antiferromagnetic (HM AFM) normal state. This single spin superconducting (SSS) phase contains broken time reversal symmetry in addition to broken gauge symmetry, the former due to the underlying magnetic order in the normal state. A classification of normal state symmetries leads to the conclusion that the HM AFM normal phase whose point group contains the inversion operator contains the least symmetry possible which still allows for a zero momentum pairing instability. The GinzburgLandau free energy for the superconducting order parameter is constructed consistent with the symmetry of the normal phase, electromagnetic gauge invariance and the crystallographic point group symmetry including inversion. For cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal point groups, the possible symmetries of the superconducting phase are classified, and the free energy is used to construct a generalized phase diagram. We identify the leading candidate out of the possible SSS phases for each point group. The symmetry of the superconducting phase is used to determine the cases where the gap function has generic zeros (point or line nodes) on the Fermi surface. Such nodes always occur, hence thermodynamic properties will have power-law behavior at low temperature. † E-mail: [email protected] ‡ E-mail: [email protected]

متن کاملOn the Crossover from Bcs Superconductivity to Bose Condensation
We outline a microscopic approach to the superconducting fluctuations and pairing correlations in the attractive Hubbard model above Tc, using the functional integral method. A crossover from BCS superconductivity to Bose condensation of preformed pairs is studied by constructing the appropriate Ginzburg–Landau functionals. The differences between the lattice and the continuum models are discus...
متن کاملGeneralized Ginzburg-Landau models for non-conventional superconductors
We review some recent extensions of the Ginzburg-Landau model able to describe several properties of non-conventional superconductors. In the first extension, s-wave superconductors endowed with two different critical temperatures are considered, their main thermodynamical and magnetic properties being calculated and discussed. Instead in the second extension we describe spin-triplet supercondu...
متن کاملOn a Generalized Ginzburg-Landau Energy for Superconducting/Normal Composite Materials
We review and extend some results for a generalized Ginzburg-Landau energy functional, introduced in the physics literature to model composite superconducting/normal body. In this formulation, the order parameter is defined everywhere in the composite system, with the intention to capture the effect of superconducting electrons pairs diffusing in the normal parts. For suitable choices of the ma...

We introduce and discuss discrete two-dimensional models for XY spin systems and screw dislocations in crystals. We prove that, as the lattice spacing ε tends to zero, the relevant energies in these models behave like a free energy in the complex Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity, justifying in a rigorous mathematical language the analogies between screw dislocations in crystals and v...
متن کاملAn Equivalence Relation for the Ginzburg-landau Equations of Superconductivity
Gauge invariance is used to establish an equivalence relation between solutions of the time-independent and time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations that describe the same physical state of a superconductor. The equivalence relation shows how equilibrium conngurations are obtained as large-time asymptotic limits of solutions of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations.
